Press Release n. 06

12 July 2012

The reflection on our mission as Jesuits today took place during the morning session. The starting point was the February 25, 2011 letter where Father General pointed out “three dimensions of our mission that should be present in all apostolic sectors: the service of faith, the promotion of justice and collaboration with others”.

After morning prayer, two Procurators introduced the themes for reflection. Father Arun de Souza, from the BombayProvince, in the context of both Western and Buddhist and Hindu traditions, pointed out three important ideas that bring all our ministries together: the enlightenment that brings together minds and hearts, networking to recognize the presence of God in our community, and the vision that invites us to act in appropriate ways. Father Jose Ignacio Garcia, from the Province ofCastille, spoke out of a European context. He spoke about the three dimensions and concluded with two questions he considered important for the Society’s mission in the next few years: international collaboration and the Society’s priorities.

After some time for personal prayer, the Procurators gathered according to languages to evaluate the manner in which the Society lives out these three dimensions today: lights, shadows and recommendations. During their discussion they tried to name the shadows and lights in these sectors and made suggestions to Father General for the Society’s governance.  The three secretaries in charge of these three sectors benefited also from the exchanges.

In the afternoon, all the Procurators gathered in the aula to synthesize the lights and shadows they discussed in their language groups. They also made suggestions to Father General. Some exchange of ideas ensued and Father General concluded the session by briefly synthesized today’s work.
